Gross Domestic Product (GDP) 2021

The GDP recorded a growth of 4.09 percent in 2021 compared to contraction of 10.01 percent in 2020. Similarly, the Gross National Income (GNI) increased by 4.10 percent, an increase of 11.24 percentage points.
Amongst the major economic sectors, the tertiary (service) sector recorded a highest growth of 6.13 percent followed by the primary sector at 2.05 percent while the secondary (industry) sector recorded growth at 1.96 percent in 2021 compared to 2020. As a share of the economy, the service sector had the highest share at 46.61 percent followed by the secondary sector at 34.20 percent and the primary sector with 19.19 percent.
On the demand side, the Government Final Consumption Expenditure (GFCE) posted a growth of 5.73 percent and Household Final Consumption Expenditure by 4.85 percent in 2021. The Gross Capital Formation/Investment increased by 12.60 from a contraction of 15.99 percent in 2020. Further the export of goods and services increased by 8.92 percent, and at the same time the import of goods and services also increased by 15.74 percent in 2021.
With a total population of 756,129 (Population Projection 2017–2047), the GDP per capita for 2021 was estimated at Nu. 248,334.31 (the US $ 3,358.59), an increase of Nu 18,279 (USD$ 254.23) from the previous year.
