Parliament of Bhutan joins in the celebration of the International Day of Democracy

To celebrate the International Day of Democracy, the Hon’ble Deputy Speaker, Tshencho Wangdi participated in the Online Conference on the International Day of Democracy on the theme &ldquo Role of Legislature in Fostering Effective and Meaningful Democracy” organised by the Lok Sabha, India

To celebrate the International Day of Democracy, the Hon’ble Deputy Speaker, Tshencho Wangdi participated in the Online Conference on the International Day of Democracy on the theme &ldquo Role of Legislature in Fostering Effective and Meaningful Democracy” organised by the Lok Sabha, India. 

The Conference was presided over by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha Sri Om Birla  and saw participation of Parliaments of Austria, Guyana, Maldives, Mongolia, Namibia,Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Zimbabwe etc and Presiding Officers of the  Indian Legislative Assembly. The Speakers spoke on the important role that the legislature played in fostering effective and meaningful democracy and reflected  upon the various aspects of democracy. The President of the  Inter-Parliamentary Union, President Duarte Pacheco was also present in the conference. 


The International Day of Democracy is celebrated every year on 15th September   after being established in 2007 through a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) encouraging governments to strengthen and consolidate democracy.
